Where can I find out what digital cameras (1) allow them to be used as
always-on web-cams and (2) also allow varying qualities of real-time video
to be captured? (straight down the cable onto the PCs hard-drive.)

Thanks in advance, Simon.

A video camera. Most digital camera don't offer real time streaming
video, they are to memory card only.

Modern video camera can do decent 640x480 video realtime (though you may
need firewire card) and can also capture images. Don't expect quality
images above 640x480 though.

The Fuji S602(Z) can do so along with a few other Fujis (can't remember
their models). Check out their site.

I have one. Biggest problem in webcam mode is the lack of brightness and
contrast controls in the windows driver. I'm not the only one that's
complained that it needs far to bright a room to operate in webcam mode.
Pointed out a window would be fine but dimly lit downstairs rec room
scenario is out unless lots of lighting available.
