Have 2 computers (B=K6-2 & A=2200+) running 98se that should network,
BUT:
1) A can ping to B but not the reverse?
2) A does NOT show a workgroup below "Entire Network" in Network
Neighborhood, B does.
3) In Network Neighborhood:
a) A: Click on A's icon yields Desktop icon.
b) B: Click on B's icon yields nothing further.
4) Hosts and Networks files have nothing added and are identical between
platforms.
5) Both platform's NIC will ping 127.0.0.1 and its static IP so cards
are ok.
6) The IP addresses are ok when I check properties and workgroup name
for both is "workgroup" (original huh?).
7) Both are using TCP/IP and no NetBeui.
Using addon NIC in B and onboard LAN for A (KT4V-L MainBrd).
Can someone explain this to me and how to fix it? Darn thing should not
be so difficult but have run out of troubleshooting options.
Also, refresh my mind, isn't the telnet just a client and no server on
win98se? Seems like I used to telnet between 98 platforms as an SA but
don't recall if they had third party software or not.
Very much appreciated,
Ron

Running through a switch or hub? If not, are you using an appropriate
crossover cable?

Do both systems have File Sharing engaged AND something shared?
(Apparently, on A you are sharing the desktop. What are you sharing on B?)

Take some time studying LMHOSTS file structure.

Do Start, Find, Computer. Enter the name of the other computer. See what
turns up.

Telnet on non-servers are clients.

How are these 2 computers connected? Only these two computers around
correct? No firewalls installed correct?

I don't remember if this works with W98 but try anyway and tell me
what you get for these 2 commands (do this on both A and B):

1. C:\> route print
2. C:\> ipconfig /all

Is the NetBEUI protocol installed on both computers?

Install NetBEUI.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
