I was helping my brother-in-law install Windows 98 SE on his new PC that has
a Mainboard (Socket A) L7VMM2 motherboard (has on-board video, sound,
Ethernet, etc...). I find it hard to work with on-board devices - I find it
difficult to find the right driver on the motherboard disk (they have so
many different ones present!).
When it starts up before entering windows, it stops booting and prints the
following message:
"Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or an
application.
The windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but this
device file no longer exists.
If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated
application using its uninstall or setup program.
If you still want to use the application associated with this device file,
try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.
Press a key to continue"
It does this three times referring to these files: vnetsetup.vxd
vredir.vxd
dfs.vxd
When you press a key three times - it boots normally into Windows. I would
like to remove this annoyance if possible. I tried searching the Windows
registry for each of these files. When I found reference to these files - I
deleted these references. Now, when it boots, it only displays the same
error message once (without actual reference to the files at all). I think
it has something to do with the on-board Ethernet card (I got it to work
fine). I also have a bit of trouble with the USB Root hub - in the Windows'
Device Manager - it list 4 USB root hubs, with the last one not working
properly??
1) Any ideas on what I should do? I might have installed the wrong
Ethernet card driver....
2) Comments?
3) I considered a re-install of windows, is this a good idea? Is it
necessary?

Bootup in Safe Mode and check Device Manager for multiple entries of
anything like two different NICS, excess sound/audio, etc. Remove whatever
seems fishy (if multiple entries under a device, remove all of them) and
reboot to let Win98 detect and reinstall what's necessary. Reinsatll Windows
as alast resort because whatever is messed up could make reinstallation
impossible or may not get fixed if you're getting those error messages on
boot. If the USB that suppossedly isn't working according to Device Manager,
does work, don't worry about the yellow !<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: windows boot up problem (L7VMM2 board) |
