What's Up with the x1950x etc cards

I was late to the game on the x1950x cards. According to Tom's they
were the card for the range I can pay.....bummer.

I too have a X800 mine is the xt though and an AIW. It is an excellent
card and I wouldn't replace it if it wasn't AGP. I'll just have to
keep my eyes open.

For most users looking to buy a single standalone video card, there is no
sense in purchasing the X1950XT/X, because it costs almost as much as a
8800GTS 320 MB.

That's good advice from a financial aspect. There is more to consider
though such as want. I'd prefer at this point to stay with ATI not
because it's ATI as much as it I want to reamain and AMD'er.

If an nVidia card plops along at the performance price point I
want I'd buy it though cause there is no Intel involved (I hope)

With the new Driver sets .. the X2600 xt's aren't to bad and cost a little
less than the 1950 pro's. The next two cards I was looking at getting was a
1950 GT .... pretty inexpensive then the x2600 xt. The problem with the
Tom's HW card comparison is that it does not have the results using the
latest drivers, and the last two driver releases were really supposed to
have increased the performance of the 2600's by ~ 7 -> 9 %.

I'm not sure where you live, but NewEgg still has several 1950 pro's and the
GT's.

Newegg had a Sapphire 1950 Xt for $168 .. just recently Out Of Stock, and I
bet it doesn't come back at that price if it ever does come back.

When I bought the videocard for this system I chose the X1950Pro. I think
there probably were 2900 cards around at the time, but I never buy the
newest thing, and in this case I didn't go for the XT either. Back then my
thought was that the next videocard upgrade for me would be to buy a second
X1950Pro and use Crossfire, once they got cheap enough. At the moment they
are a little dearer than I would want, and it is also a little earlier than
I would want (I certainly have nothing that I want to play at the moment
which I cannot). However, if they really are going to dry-up and get
expensive, I may have to reconsider. I think I'm going to end up by-passing
the Crossfire intermediate upgrade and moving directly to something "new and
improved". How much extra life do you suppose getting the second X1950Pro
would buy before I needed to move on in any case?
