Post subject: No digital zoom - Does it matter?

I have seen some digital camera's which i like some have digital zoom,
some have optical zoom, and quite a few have both. What i would like
to know is does not having a digital zoom matter at all. I know
optical zoom is more important but what is the advantage if any for
having a camera with digital zoom and what would digital zoom be used
for.
Will i be missing out on a camera that only has optical zoom at 3x.

Digital zoom makes no difference in your final image, and there are those
who are quite contemptuous of it.
It can be useful for situations where you will not have access to a computer
for resizing, and for occasionally as a sort of software magnifier for
manual focus.

Many cameras offere a zoom on playback, but not recording. Some offer
a focus check without the 'digital zoom' feature. Both of these are
functions of the scanning of the display panel, not of the 'taking'

No. Photoshop or the like is also capable of creating i.e. a 2
megapixels picture from a part of a 2 megapixels picture - possibly
with more sophisticated interpolation algorithms...
The only 'useful' digital zoom is the "smart zoom"
(http://www.megapixel.net/html/articles/article-dzoom.html)
where the camera saves the center part of the picture as a smaller

Minolta uses that in their Dimage7 series. Tried it once, never again.
Far easier with a large flashcard or microdrive to just record the
'full' image. later, crop that section - then you're also sure that

Digital zoom should never be used because it degrades the image quality

Forget Digital Zoom. Worthless. PC software can do better!
Optical zoom actually 'brings the image closer', that is genuinely magnifies
it and enlarges detail. For digital, imagine a large rubber band, draw a
circle on it, then expand the band. Yes, the cirlce is bigger but NO MORE
DETAIL and it deteriortates the larger it gets.....forget digital. Only
Optical counts.

Once you get past optical zoom and into digital zoom the effect is the same
as re-sizing upwards, loss of detail.
